The Fair Work Commission has just announced that the Minimum Wage will increase by 1.75% (National & across Modern Awards) for 2020. This means the national minimum wage will rise by $753.80 a week or $19.84 per hour from July 1. The decision comes amidst a significant downturn in Australia’s economy, driven by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and lingering effects of bushfires in parts of the country.
The increase this year will be substantially lower than that awarded in previous years due to the marked changes in the economic environment and tax-transfer systems, and including the potential threat of a second wave of coronavirus infections.
As the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has not been consistent across sectors of the economy and affecting some industries harder than others, different operative dates for different groups of modern awards will apply as follows:
